On July 21, 2026, St. Mary’s Episcopal School honored the memory of Charlotte Winford Zehring, whose courageous battle with brain cancer ended at home, leaving behind a profound legacy of kindness.

Her departure has left an irreplaceable void, yet her spirit of generosity and motivation continues to inspire all who knew her.

Born February 9, 1955, in Wayne County, Tennessee, to Tom and Christine Winford, Charlotte embraced service and scholarship early on.

Her academic path included Lausanne School (1973), Queens College (Charlotte, NC), Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) for her B.A., and a Master’s from Memphis State University—foundations for a distinguished 43-year career.

Charlotte dedicated herself to nurturing young minds at St. Mary’s and Lausanne, shaping futures through passionate English instruction and inspiring cross-country coaching.

Her classrooms radiated warmth, empowering girls to thrive academically and personally. Athletes flourished under her motivational leadership and genuine encouragement.

Beyond academics, Charlotte maintained meaningful connections with former students, providing guidance and friendship well past graduation.

Recognized nationally, she received the 2007 Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Joseph B. Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award and the 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Teacher Recognition Award.

Charlotte’s Essence: A Heartfelt Presence That Elevates Others

She possessed an extraordinary gift for making every individual feel acknowledged and respected, whether through literary insight or athletic encouragement.

Her passion for classic literature—including To Kill a Mockingbird and A Dangerous Game—brought stories vividly to life, enriching generations of learners.

Tributes from former students highlight her enduring impact: Jen Kaiser recalls Charlotte as a maternal figure during hardship; Kendall Hennessy Rosati remembers her as a supportive coach; Hita Mohan and Hallie share how her guidance sparked lifelong appreciation for reading.

Even after retiring in 2019, Charlotte remained a living example of integrity, perseverance, and intellectual curiosity, facing illness with dignity and familial support.

Survived by husband Kyle Zehring, siblings Margaret, Tom, Frank, and extended family, Charlotte’s memory will continue to guide and uplift those she loved.

Services will be held August 2 at Mission Church, 6000 Briarcrest Avenue, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a 11:00 a.m. ceremony.

Charlotte Zehring’s life exemplifies how one person’s devotion can illuminate countless paths, leaving behind a legacy that inspires ongoing growth and compassion.
