Estacado High School coach Tamarick Courtney was detained by officers after transporting his students in his own vehicle, while the school bus keys were reportedly not available.

Tamarick serves as an assistant coach on the Estacado High School boys basketball coaching staff for the 2026–26 season under head coach Tony Wagner.

Recently, Tamarick was involved in an incident while attempting to bring the basketball team to Cooper Liberty High School for a match.

After the school bus malfunctioned, Tamarick opted to drive the athletes in his personal car, resulting in a traffic stop by authorities.

While Lubbock ISD Seeks Resignation for Estacado Coach Following Transportation Incident, Community Stands Behind Him!

On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Estacado High School planned to transport its athletes to a basketball game at Cooper Liberty High School.

However, due to missing bus keys, Coach Tamarick Courtney chose to use his own vehicle to ensure student participation.

Subsequently, an officer issued a speeding citation, which the coach disputes, asserting he maintained safe speeds throughout.

I was not speeding with those kiddos in my vehicle I was pulled over because the officer said I didn’t make a complete stop at the stop sign entering the parking lot of Liberty High School and I do have insurance those insurance tickets are 8months old

Despite the coach’s commitment to student safety, LISD Human Resources demanded his resignation or termination.

Coach Courtney refused to step down, opting instead to file a formal grievance and seek support from the Lubbock Branch NAACP for a Level One Grievance review.

Community members rallied in support, praising his quick thinking and dedication amid systemic failures.

Widespread acknowledgment emerged that few educators would prioritize student access over protocol when faced with logistical challenges.

As of now, Estacado High School remains silent on the matter, but public sentiment leans toward advocating equitable treatment for both parties.
