Toledo's former collegiate wrestler Greg Wojciechowski, known as "The Great Wojo," passed away on a Tuesday night at age 73 due to a heart attack.

Born as Gregory M. Wojciechowski in 1951, he launched his wrestling journey at Whitmer High School, securing Ohio state heavyweight championships in both 1967 and 1968.

He claimed the NCAA heavyweight title at Toledo in 1971, excelling further at the University of Toledo and representing the U.S. in global wrestling competitions throughout the 1970s.

Additionally, Greg served as an alternate for the U.S. Greco-Roman and freestyle teams, earning runner-up status at the Olympic Trials of 1968, 1972, and 1976 before joining the squad in 1980.

However, the U.S. boycotted those games following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, preventing Wojciechowski from competing.

Post-college, he transitioned to professional wrestling, capturing three World Wrestling Association heavyweight titles over 12 years.

He also competed in the World Wrestling Federation and the American Wrestling Federation, gaining international recognition.

Beyond the ring, he taught at Toledo Public Schools and coached at Libbey High School before leading Bowsher High School's wrestling program, nurturing future athletes.
