Swimmer John Servati Lost His Life Protecting His Girlfriend Amid Tragic Collapse

John Servati, a dedicated member of the Alabama Swimming and Diving squad, made the ultimate sacrifice to save Lauren Swann when a concrete wall fell upon them during a severe storm.

Born on February 1, 1993, in South Bend, Indiana, John excelled academically and athletically, earning recognition as the Tupelo High School Athlete of the Year in 2011 and representing the University of Alabama in 2013.

On April 1, 2014, while at Lauren's home in Birmingham, Alabama, a sudden tornado triggered a mini-mudslide. Despite the danger, John shielded Lauren from debris, using his 6-foot frame to create space. When the wall finally collapsed onto him, he remained steadfast in his effort to protect her.

Lauren managed to call 911, but help arrived too late. Rescuers required multiple people to lift the concrete that had pinned John, who tragically succumbed to his injuries. Lauren did not see him again until his funeral.

John's legacy lives on through his academic achievements—including a 3.55 GPA—and his deep love for family, friends, and his golden retriever, Duke. He is remembered as a devoted student, a loyal partner, and a courageous individual who prioritized others above all.
