Father Stanley MacDonald, a cherished clergy member, mentor, and sports lover from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, departed this world on Sunday, May 11, 2026, at 92 years old.

His remarkable 66-year tenure in the priesthood profoundly shaped Eastern Nova Scotia and the St. Francis Xavier University community, where his famous "Go X Go" chant became legendary among generations of students and athletes.

Born in Glace Bay, Stanley MacDonald developed a passion for sports early in life.

This enthusiasm for athletics carried over to St. Francis Xavier University, where he excelled as a dual-sport competitor, leading the varsity rugby and hockey teams and serving as captain of the 1953 men’s rugby squad at Antigonish.

His commitment to sports foreshadowed the vibrant supporter he would later become.

After graduating from St. FX in 1954 and completing seminary studies, MacDonald began his vocation as a priest.

His ministry spanned multiple locations across Nova Scotia, including parishes in Cape Breton and Antigonish, where he served with distinction and compassion.

In 2008, following retirement from parish duties, Father MacDonald returned to his alma mater as a permanent resident of Mockler Hall on the St. FX campus.

This homecoming marked the start of what many describe as his second calling—becoming the heartbeat of St. FX Athletics and a beloved figure on campus.

For 17 years, he unofficially served as a guidance counselor, book club leader, spiritual advisor, and dining companion to countless students, creating unforgettable memories wherever he went.

Father MacDonald evolved from a respected priest into an iconic campus presence through his steadfast support for St. FX athletics.

His memorable "Go X Go" chant inspired crowds and motivated student-athletes throughout all sports.

Leo MacPherson, Director of Athletics and Recreation at St. FX, remarked:

“Father Stanley MacDonald embodied the spirit of St. FX Athletics. He was the ultimate fan—his kindness, care, and dedication united our community. He greeted teams, connected with student-athletes, attended games, visited practices, and offered prayers before every event.

The university honored him in 2013 with the "X-Ceptional Award" for exceptional support to St. FX athletics, and inducted him into the St. Francis Xavier University Sports Hall of Fame as a builder in September 2026.

The Passing Of Stanley MacDonald Unites The Community In Sorrow

Father Stanley MacDonald passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2026, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish.

News of his death sparked widespread grief and remembrance throughout Eastern Nova Scotia and beyond.

Bishop Wayne Kirkpatrick of the Diocese of Antigonish praised MacDonald as “well-loved everywhere he served.”

“At recent celebrations in Inverness and Sydney River—where he ministered in the 1970s and 1980s—people still recall him fondly,
" said Bishop Kirkpatrick.
As St. FX’s resident priest, his infectious smile, warm voice, and signature chant energized university sporting events. Father Stan touched countless lives, and his absence will be deeply felt.

St. FX President Andrew Hakin reflected on MacDonald’s lasting influence:

“For seventeen incredible years, Fr. Stanley MacDonald was more than a priest—he was a mentor, spiritual guide, meal companion, and the embodiment of Xaverian values.

He truly represented what St. FX stands for.

The university has preserved audio and video of Father MacDonald’s famous cheer, ensuring his inspirational presence continues to inspire future generations at St. FX.

Social media overflowed with tributes upon hearing of his passing. The STFX Store shared:

“We’ve lost a legend. Rev. Stanley MacDonald, Class of ‘54—our beloved Fr. Stan—has departed. A priest, mentor, superfan, and friend to all, he illuminated StFX with his warmth, wisdom, and iconic “Go X Go.” His spirit endures in every chant, game, and act of kindness across campus.

Family and community members shared heartfelt memories. Karen Saule Campbell, aunt of MacDonald’s great-nephews, wrote:

“No one could be a better man.

In a 2026 interview, Father MacDonald summed up the community he cherished:

“At St. FX, everyone matters—professors, custodians, Sisters of St. Martha. That sense of unity is precious. Real change happens when we work together.

His legacy of kindness, faith, and community spirit will continue to inspire St. FX and all who knew him for generations.
