William Bernard O'Neil, known affectionately as Bill, was born on March 22, 1942, in Saranac Lake, New York. He was the cherished only child of Bernard C. O'Neil and Kathryn Welton O'Neil.

Growing up in Lake Placid, Bill attended local institutions before earning his degree from Northwood School. His enthusiasm for athletics and education propelled him toward Norwich University, where he graduated in 1965 as a standout in three sports.

Bill's remarkable talents earned him recognition in multiple Halls of Fame, including those of Norwich University, the Vermont Principals Association, the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Federation of High Schools.

Above all, his heart belonged to his family. His half-century marriage to Mary O'Neil formed the foundation of his life, nurturing a household brimming with joy, encouragement, and unwavering support.

Together, they guided nine children, instilling values that resonate across generations. Bill's commitment to coaching, teaching, and community involvement was matched by Mary's steadfast presence, making their partnership legendary.

A Coaching Legend With A Remarkable 45-Year Journey At Essex High SchoolMarked By Achievements And Unforgettable Mentorship

Bill began his career at Northwood School, teaching and coaching three sports before stepping into roles as athletic director. After briefly working in insurance, he embraced his destiny at Essex High School in 1973.

He taught English while coaching boys' hockey, girls' soccer, and softball, leading Essex to 24 state championships and nearly 1,300 victories. Bill's passion extended beyond competition—he genuinely cared for shaping young lives.

"It was Mr. O'Neill who inspired me to become an English teacher," shared former student Diane Adam. "He brought literature to life. For forty years, I introduced myself each September saying it was because of him."

“Billy was my coach and teacher at Northwood. He gave me the nickname I've had for 58 years. He also took this wise@$$ and turned me into a respectful young adult—thank you Billy. It’s because of Billy/Arnie that I played two sports in college and hockey professionally. Thank you.

Balancing full-time teaching, coaching, night classes, and managing a municipal pool, Bill pursued a Master's Degree across three universities over thirty years.

Retirement did not slow Bill; instead, he continued mentoring youth through local teams and remained deeply invested in their growth.

Bill's love for people outshone even his love for sports. Whether on the field or in the classroom, his ability to connect left indelible marks on everyone he met.

He expressed gratitude to Miller 5's staff, especially Milton Rosa-Ortiz, for their compassionate care during his final days. The O'Neils also mourn the passing of son Michael and grandson Declan earlier in 2026.

Countless individuals shared their sorrow and memories, reflecting Bill's profound impact on their lives. His warmth, humor, and dedication touched students, athletes, colleagues, and friends alike.

In lieu of flowers, donations to blood services in Bill's honor are appreciated—a meaningful way to honor someone who gave so much.

Bill O'Neil's journey stands as a testament to love, leadership, and lasting legacy. With Mary beside him, they built a family and career destined for remembrance.

Vermont has lost a legend, yet his spirit persists in every lesson imparted, every victory celebrated, and every heart he inspired.

Rest In Peace, Coach.
