Santiago Cruz, a 17-year-old wrestler from Rock Springs High School, has emerged as one of Wyoming's most talented athletes, driven by a singular ambition: claiming a state championship.

Driven by more than personal ambition, Cruz aims to motivate young athletes and build a lasting impact, especially for his younger sibling.

Cruz shares:

"Wrestling teaches life lessons that extend far beyond the mat—discipline, resilience, and growth," he explains.

Despite early setbacks, including a UCL injury that derailed his freshman season, Cruz rebounded with exceptional achievements: 1× All-American, 3× Freestyle State Champion, 2× Folkstyle State Champion, and 1× Triple Crown State Champion. His 65 career victories reflect relentless effort.

Off the mat, Cruz transformed his physique—adding 20 pounds of muscle—while maintaining academic excellence with a 3.75 GPA. He balances rigorous training with mentoring teammates, embodying holistic development.

"I push myself daily to ensure this dream becomes reality," he says, emphasizing preparation for potential third championship attempt.

Beyond wrestling, Cruz shines as a multi-sport athlete for Rock Springs High School's football team. As a versatile player (cornerback, receiver, running back), he posted elite stats: 5'6", 140 lbs, 4.8-second 40-yard dash, 205-pound squat, and 315-pound deadlift. His leadership earned All-State Honorable Mention honors and a national Little League title.

Academically, he plans to study business or sports medicine, weighing future paths in coaching or professional athletics. Family and coaches remain his pillars of support.

"Grateful for every sacrifice and moment of encouragement," he acknowledges his parents, Coach Young, and teammates.

As senior year unfolds, Cruz channels determination into leaving an indelible mark on Wyoming's athletic landscape. His journey proves that perseverance transforms obstacles into triumphs.
