A 15-year-old girl perished while attempting to aid a group of mistreated and starving canines.
Makayla Fortner, an active member of the girls’ varsity soccer team at Bryant High School, was discovered deceased near noon on June 11 at a residence on White Oak Drive in Alexander.
While offering sustenance to these animals, the dogs became hostile and attacked her, resulting in fatal injuries.
Community Grieves Over Teen’s Death During Dog Rescue Attempt
Makayla and her mother, Stephanie Wilkie, visited the property intending to provide care for approximately 30–40 dogs abandoned without proper nourishment.
Earlier, Stephanie had publicly requested assistance via Facebook concerning a severe dog hoarding scenario.
The couple, both elderly, maintained over 40 dogs—including unaltered puppies and fresh litters—on their land.
Makayla and Stephanie attempted to rescue two dogs, bathing them and treating the yard for parasites.
Makayla trimmed overgrown vegetation across the property.
Stephanie sought community help with spaying, neutering, and rehoming efforts through Cash App donations.
A neighbor reported prior complaints to Saline County officials regarding the dogs’ condition.
Heidi Clay, a local resident, noted initial issues began upon the couple’s arrival, including abandoned vehicles and aggressive canines near property boundaries.
Other neighbors confirmed repeated calls to authorities with limited resolution.
Online criticism arose when some expressed greater empathy for the dogs than for Makayla’s family.
James Franklin McCool condemned insensitive remarks, urging respect for the grieving mother.
Following the tragedy, officials removed 14 dogs—all euthanized—and left four confined indoors.
A fundraiser now supports Makayla’s family expenses.
