Tom Izzo's spouse, Lupe, spent her formative years in East Lansing and holds a deep admiration for the Big Ten Conference's collegiate atmosphere.

Following Alan Haller's departure from Michigan State, Tom Izzo alongside assistant director Jennifer Smith assumed interim athletic directorial duties during the university's search for a permanent leader.

A comprehensive search for a new athletic director is anticipated to commence within the next few weeks. In a statement, Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz emphasized,

“This marks a critical juncture for collegiate athletics, where innovation, strategic communication, and community involvement are paramount,”  “Our forthcoming athletic director will guide one of the nation's most distinguished athletic programs, encompassing 23 varsity sports, a fervent supporter base, a storied tradition of academic and athletic distinction, and a visionary path forward.”

Izzo stands among the most successful college basketball coaches in history, widely recognized as the embodiment of Michigan State athletics.

From 1983 to 1995, he served as an assistant at Michigan State under the guidance of legendary coach Jud Heathcote prior to assuming leadership in 1995.

Under his tenure, Michigan State secured eight Final Four appearances, 11 Big Ten championships, and six Big Ten Tournament titles, culminating in the program's second national championship in 2000.

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, Izzo ranks as the seventh-winningest active head coach in college basketball with 737 victories.

Tom Izzo And Lupe Marinez: Nurturing A Family Of Three

Tom Izzo and Lupe Marinez tied the knot in May 1992, sharing over three decades of partnership. Their connection blossomed through Tom's sister, who worked as a secretary for Jud Heathcote in the basketball office.

The couple welcomes two children: daughter Raquel Izzo McDonald, born in August 1994, and son Steven Mateen Izzo, adopted in 2000.

Raquel, now 31, graduated from Michigan State in 2017 and joined the Spartan Fund. She married Matthew McDonald in July 2026, celebrating their union on July 9 of that year.

Steven, 25, was adopted shortly after his birth on June 16, 2000. His middle name honors Mateen Cleaves, a Michigan State basketball legend.
